Rifle Permits

Bringing your own rifle into South Africa is a straightforward and well-managed process when the correct documentation is prepared in advance.

As a visiting hunter, you will be required to obtain a SAPS 520 Temporary Import Permit, issued by the South African Police Service upon arrival at the airport.

For added ease and efficiency, this permit can be pre-arranged through specialized assistance services prior to your arrival.

The permit is valid for the duration of your stay, is non-transferable, and reflects the exact details of your firearm, including make, model, calibre, and serial number.

For a more seamless arrival experience, professional firearm assistance services are available. These services can:

  • Pre-authorise your SAPS 520 permit
  • Assist with airport procedures and documentation
  • Provide meet-and-greet or VIP assistance
  • Secure storage and transport solutions for firearms when combining hunting with photographic safaris before or after your hunt.

To ensure a seamless arrival, we recommend preparing the following documents prior to travel:

  • Completed SAPS 520 form (unsigned – to be signed in front of a SAPS officer)

  • Proof of ownership:

  • U.S. hunters: notarized Customs Form 4457

  • Valid passport and return airline itinerary

  • Invitation letter from your outfitter confirming the purpose of your hunt (keep on hand at all times during traveling)

  • Ammunition within permitted limits (generally up to 200 rounds per firearm, maximum 5 kg per hunter)

  • Firearms packed in a hard-sided, lockable case with visible serial numbers

  • Maximum of four firearms per person

  • No more than one firearm per calibre

  • Maximum 200 rounds per firearm

  • Ammunition must correspond with the firearms declared

  • Prohibited firearms include fully automatic weapons and certain semi-automatic rifles

  • Handguns are generally restricted to hunting purposes only

Upon arrival in South Africa:

  • Clear passport control and collect your general luggage
  • Retrieve your firearms from the airline
  • Proceed to the SAPS Firearms Office
  • Present your documentation, including your unsigned SAPS 520 form
  • A SAPS officer will inspect your firearms, verify serial numbers, and witness your signature
  • Once issued, your Temporary Import Permit allows you to legally possess and use your firearm for hunting during your stay.
  • Passport
  • Airline tickets
  • Rifle import permit & supporting documents (if required)
  • Do not sign the SAPS 520 form before meeting the SAPS officer
  • Firearms should arrive on the same flight as the owner
  • The SAPS permit is issued free of charge, though handling fees may apply through airlines or service providers
  • During peak hunting season, allow sufficient time for processing upon arrival
